Employment at Sugar Grove Public Library District

Now Hiring: Youth Services Manager, Full Time, 30 hours, benefits

We are looking for our next trusted library leader to serve the children and families of Sugar Grove Public Library District! If you are ready to jump in ‘muddy puddles’ like Peppa Pig, ‘shake your sillies out’ in storytimes, and lead popular activities like Pokemon, Legos, and Minecraft, then you might just be our next Youth Services Manager!

Our library has been underfunded since moving into our current much larger library facility in 2009. But in April 2023, voters approved an operational increase in funding for the Sugar Grove Public Library District, which will arrive in July 2024. Our library is preparing our foundation for increased operations, and you’ll be a key part of creating and scaling up services for our growing community.

This position is a key position on the management team and responsible for leading the Youth Department and all of its services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Supervision of two (2) part time employees and volunteers

- Create, lead, and oversee children’s and family programming, including Storytimes, activities, crafts, clubs, special events, summer reading program, and community events.

- Budget management & collection development: manage and purchase titles in all formats using Baker and Taylor and Midwest Tapes.

- Basic graphic design skills (Canva)

- Analyze trends in data and create reports for monthly board meetings

In this role, you will boost early literacy and strengthen grade school learning while nurturing and cultivating community partnerships to help achieve that goal. Our community has experienced a significant demographic shift in these last few years, with many young families moving to our community, looking for more space, views of cornfields, and a tranquil small-town setting, but still close enough to shopping centers in adjacent towns. With limited activities and events for children to do in our community on the weekends, the Library plays a crucial role in the lives of our rural / suburban community. There are endless opportunities for creativity, success, and patron satisfaction. Currently we have full programs and a need for more programming staff. Thankfully our community voted “yes” to increased funding, which will arrive July 1, 2024.  Currently there are plans to increase hours and hire additional staff within a year, particularly to meet the demand of reopening on Fridays and/or adding earlier mornings. The Youth Department will be hiring an additional librarian to help with programming and outreach.

The right person for this role will bring creativity, innovation, and energy to our young library patrons.  Some upcoming projects the new Manager will be expected to implement include:

  • Renovate and purchase new furniture and fixtures for Youth Department space refresh project
  • Launch 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and other Early Childhood Initiatives
  • Restore & upgrade the children’s computer/ technology area
  • Genre Browsing project (converting picture books into browsable categories, e.g. “emotions”, “animals”, “cars”, etc.)
  • Play a key role in securing an IGA with the schools.
  • Cultivate and grow relationships with homeschooling groups, child-care facilities, and private schools.
  • Act as library liaison to service clubs and community events like Kiwanis Township of Sugar Grove “Holiday in the Grove”, Sugar Grove Corn Boil (July), and Groovin in the Grove concert series.
  • Create an outreach schedule and hire an employee to support initiatives outside of the library building.

Qualifications

- MLIS required.

- Understanding and practice of library philosophy including the Library Bill of Rights, Intellectual Freedom, Censorship, and The Freedom to Read Statement, Library Core Values of Privacy and Confidentiality, and the ALA Code of Ethics

- Five (5) years of public library experience.

The Library’s hours are likely to be adjusted within the next year, and hours for this position will be increased as well.
